Below are some words from Stephen, one of our newest teammates. He joined us last year at Cowboy Tough, as we were in a bind with Daniel getting injured right before it. He stepped in for us, and has been on the team ever since! After losing his hearing in one ear at World Championships last year, we are excited to see Stephen back and healthy after a few months of Dr visits and laying low. He still has no hearing in his left ear which we often forget about, especially when we are sleep deprived!
This race, we are also introducing Jen Moos, she is stepping in for Mel and I as we are currently growing some future adventure racers. Her baby girl is due in September and our twins are due in January! We hope Jen can put up with the boys for 4 straight days, she is a beast in all disciplines including keeping the teams competitive drive going.
Jason is also out sitting this race out, he is currently rehabbing all of the muscles surrounding his hip to ensure that everything is properly working and strong! We are happy to report that he is has NO more pain in his hip and is already crushing on the mtn bike and paddling – next is running.. and then race time!!! For now, we are cheering the team on from afar and have been checking in on them every couple hours, they are doing amazing and are currently in 4th place. It’s a very exciting race so far!! We will continue to post on the Team FB page about their progress, and you can also check in on the race website to see where they are LIVE!
Some words from Stephen about the race and the teams roles and feelings before the race start!
So much to say about this race already. First off, I can’t believe it has already been 12 months since I made the journey out to Casper Wyoming for my first Cowboy Tough with Team Yogaslackers. With a $50,000 dollar prize pot and a free entry into the World Championship on the line, the Cowboy Tough has remained a proving ground for endurance athletes since its inception in 2012. Rev 3 Adventure (the masterminds behind Cowboy Tough) announced this year that they will be involved in hosting the 2017 World Championship in Wyoming, drawing extra attention to the organization and the region and attracting a heavy-hitting roster of the worlds top Adventure Racing teams to come and hone their skills in this remarkable and unforgiving landscape for this years race.
After a long and busy check-in day, filling out forms and organizing gear, trying our hardest to imagine whether mini-oreos and gummy worms will taste better on day two or three? And squinting at impossibly narrow contour lines, it is alas my favorite part of the race. We’ve turned in all our bins and bags to the support staff, and are left with only what we will take with us along the course. This is the part that comes after months of training and planning when you get to finally let go of any expectations, release your fears and doubts as they will do you no good anymore and settle in for the last nights sleep before the adventure begins.
With nearly 100 miles of paddling and a time trial challenge for the fastest team to climb the highest peak in central Wyoming, this years Cowboy Tough is sure to test our limits. I’m honored to be a part of such a devoted and inspiring team of certainly insane individuals. Our Captain Daniel Staudigel and first-mate Erik Sanders will command the primary navigation and route selecting as Jen Moos and myself focus on the the big picture and overall welfare of the team. This is Team Yogaslackers resident man-bun signing off, wishing you all safe and happy adventuring. Stay tuned for a full race report including exclusive tips on how to suffer the least while listening to Dan rant for hours on end and get the inside scoop on questions such as “Is Erik just quiet or does he secretly hate me?” and “does everything or nothing matter?”.
